Long, long ago on a stormy morning, Huria Matenga woke up and looked out the window. She got a shock from what she saw. She saw a ship in furious waves. Straight away she woke up Hemi and Hohepata and ran down to the beach. Henry Squirrell tied a rope to his waist and jumped. He got swept onto a rock and knocked unconscious.
The sailors threw a rope to them but they had to keep on doing it over and over again. Huria, Hemi and Hohepata plunged into the water, grabbed the rope and tugged it to shore. Huria tied it to a huge rock then the sailors crawled along the rope one by one. The captain went last and took one last look at Henry. He went along the rope. When he was half way along the rope, it split in two. Huria went under the captain, caught him and pulled him to shore.
Huria lit a fire. When they looked back they saw Henry on the deck, calling for help but they couldn’t because it was too rough.
Huria and the others got a gold or silver watch for their bravery and I have just told you the story of the wreck of the Delaware.
